Rhetorical Analysis – Outline

Instructions

Creating an outline is a crucial part of the prewriting process. It is meant to serve as a guide during the drafting stage, so its content should be easily accessible to the eye. Therefore, avoid full sentences and too many details. In the upcoming module, you will write a draft based on the current event article you chose using the outline you create for this activity.

Activity

Create an outline for your selected current event article.

The outline should include:

  • Establish the thesis of the article
  • Present your thesis: 1 sentence that states the overall success of the article’s/speech’s argument and names the three appeals

Summary Paragraph

  • Present the main supportive points of the article

Analysis Paragraph 1 (ethos)

  • Support your point with evidence from the article
  • Summary Sentence: Conclude your point

Analysis Paragraph 2 (pathos)

  • Topic Sentence: State your second analysis point
  • Support your point with evidence from the article

  • Summary Sentence: Conclude your point

Concluding Paragraph

Each section’s content should be written as concisely and precisely as possible. Proper grammar should be used, but the outline does not need to include complete sentences.
