This is just one page, not really a paper but more of a discussion, please. So don’t make it sound too paper-like, more a discussion. I wrote some stuff so just help me make it sound good! Assignment
This week’s topic focused on caring and reflective practice in contemporary nursing. In your initial response, provide a definition of what person-centred care means to you. Describe how you will apply principles holistic nursing, cultural humility, and self-reflection in your future role as a nurse practitioner. Medicine and Health Assignment
Person centered care to me is exactly what the term describes, the healthcare team putting the patient first and at the center of their own healthcare. Patient centered care is seeing the patient as a human being and not the disease/illness, burden, or as a medical record number. Too many times do the healthcare providers talk about their patients in terms of their illness/disease rather by the patient’s name and I will be the first to admit this fault myself. As my nurse colleagues and I are giving report, we would start with something along the lines of “room 24b, the guy with the brain tumor and craniotomy”.
Not only are the nurses guilty of doing this but so are the providers. Person centered care is important because patients come from all different education levels, cultures, value and belief systems and we as healthcare providers need to make sure that, we are able to meet patients at their level. Patients’ needs to be at the center of their health care because when a patient is involved and integrated into their health plans and treatment plans, they feel empowered, and knowledgeable to be on top of their own overall health. The patient needs to be educated on their disease management, and treatments, because this will decrease return trips to the emergency room or admission to the hospital. Patient centered care to me is building a trusting provider-patient relationship, treating my patients with respect, compassion dignity that they deserve. As I have mentioned in my previous post that growing up in an underserved community with high poverty levels. I have experienced first-hand the lack of education patients receive, the extensive amount of waiting time to obtain an appointment (which are months out), and the patients being rushed out of the doctor’s office because there is 30 other patients waiting to be seen in the doctor’s office. As a future FNP provider, I want to deliver personalized care, support and treatment plans that are understandable and obtainable to them. I want to celebrate with them in times of happiness and empathetic in times of bad health. Overall, I want my patients to feel that they are the center of care and the health care team revolves around them, that their physical, emotional and overall health and personal needs are met. This is why the NP role is so attractive to me, because we are able to provide holistic care for our patients and see the overall big picture. APA FORMAR
