Assessment 2 is an individualised piece of work aimed at assessing your interviewing skills and
academic writing ability in relation to nursing. There are two parts to this assessment:
- Health assessment interviews
You are required to conduct and record a patient assessment interview. This interview serves two
purposes. It:
• allows you to demonstrate and then analyse your interviewing skills for Assessment 2; and
• forms the basis of part 2 of your assignment.
This video is due before Friday, week 7 (9th April) at 5PM so that we can make sure it is ready for marking in week - Analysis of the interview
Instructions
• Each student will conduct, document and video record a health assessment interview. On
campus students will complete this during the tutorial in week 7. Off campus students will need
to complete this at home in week 7. The health assessment form can be found on the week 5
learning material MAP
• Students will have 20 minutes to complete their interview. The interview should be
between 6-10 minutes duration. This will give you enough ‘material to analyse for part
two of your assessment.
• Students will ONLY complete Section A of the Health Assessment Form (HAF) up until and
including the question related to religion and culture. This form can be found on the
week 5 learning material MAP.
• Each student will need to provide a recording device (such as iPad, laptop or smart phone) that
can record the video.
• Ensure you have had a trial run before you attend your tutorial session, and make sure that
you have looked in Week 5’s module at the link titled “Recording video instruction sheet”.
What parts of the HAF do I need to complete for the video?
• Section A of the HAF needs to be completed up until and including the questions related to
religion and culture. This is the first page of the HAF only (after the title page). This form can
be found on the week 5 learning material MAP.
• Confidentiality needs to be maintained – patient names and details must be fictitious.
• Comprehensive data must be recorded.
• Legible writing in blue or black ink – no pencil or white out.
• Use point form / short sentences. It must be clear as to what question has been asked from
the answer recorded.
Students are required to analyse their interview in essay format.
This assessment item is due before Friday, Week 11 (16th May at 11:59PM). - Analysis of the interview
Students are required to analyse their interview following the format indicated below.
Writing skills
The assignment is required to be submitted in an essay style format which includes title page, contents
page, and end-text reference list. Please see SNM Assignment Presentation Guidelines provided under
Assignments tab.
Your writing needs to be:
• Logical – follow the marking guide format. Use clear and concise expression – use simple
and clear terminology to explain.
• Use paraphrasing – writing information in your own words and referencing – no direct
quotes from the literature to be used within this assignment.
• Do not reference lecture notes or dictionaries – as your literature source for this
assignment.
• Well-structured paragraphs and sentences – concise sentences, no bullet points or dot
points
• Correct spelling – Australian not USA.
• Use of Third Person only – Do not use – ‘I’, ‘We’, ‘One’. Use words such as ‘The nurse’
or ‘The interviewer’.
• Word Count – 1100 words (+/- 10%).

Analysis of Interview
Students are required to analyse their recorded interview in terms of:
• Body language, and
• Verbal strategies used during the interview
Follow the steps below to guide your essay formation.
Introduction (approx. 150 words)
The introduction needs to highlight what the assignment is about.
You need to ensure you:
Use correct introduction structure (introduce topic, provide context/significance of topic,
purpose of paper and structure outlining what is to follow).
State in the introduction that the information is fictitious to ensure confidentiality.
Use accurate content and terminology.
Body language (approx. 400 words)
Describe the theory in relation to Body language
Write a descriptive paragraph/s on the theory (literature) relating to body language. You need
to reference this.
Select either ONE good or poor example of your body language during the interview. Briefly describe this moment
and include the time from the video where you found the example i.e. (6.23) at the end of your description.
You only need to choose one example.
For example: ‘During the interview the nurse tapped her foot repeatedly while waiting for answers
from the patient (5.30)’.
If you chose a good example of the skill, then explain why and support your discussion with evidence
from academic journals and texts. If it was an area needing improvement, then explain why and how it
might have been improved and again support the discussion with evidence from the literature.
Verbal strategies (approx. 400 words)
Describe the theory in relation to verbal strategies
Write a descriptive paragraph/s on the theory (literature) relating to verbal strategies. You need
to reference this.
Select ONE either good or poor example of your use of verbal strategies and quote exactly from
the video (include time on video). You only need to choose one example.
Write the quote from the video word for word:
Interviewer ‘What you said’
Patient ‘What they said’
Interviewer ‘What you said’
Patient ‘What they said’
Maximum of 6 statements of conversation for example quote
Write the time from the video where you found the example at the end i.e. (6.23)
If you chose a good example of the communication style/ skills, then explain why and support your
discussion with evidence from academic journals and texts. If it was an area needing improvement,
then explain why and how it might have been improved and again support the discussion with
evidence from the literature.
Conclusion (approx. 150 words)
Must state what the assignment was about and identify the main issues and recommendations. The
conclusion should not have any references.
References
Students must follow the ECU referencing guide – APA 7th Edition.
A minimum of 8 journal articles and two books that are no more than 5 years old should be used to
support your essay. Dictionaries and lecture notes are not acceptable references.

You need to include a copy of the completed HAF (health assessment form) with this assignment.
