IRCC Online Scavenger Hunt – 15%
An important part of immigration and refugee processes in Canada is knowing how to navigate the IRCC website, including its content and forms. This assignment will allow students to familiarize themselves with this website and gain the knowledge necessary to navigate this platform and explore various immigration documents. In addition, students will have the opportunity to reflect on some of the challenges that diverse newcomer populations might experience while needing to undertake lengthy and often intrusive bureaucratic processes.
Instructions
Part A: Students will work individually to complete the IRCC Scavenger Hunt that will be posted to Blackboard. The purpose of this exercise is to familiarize you with key documents available through this website, as well as other pertinent information. This is worth 10% of your final mark.
Part B: Reflection journal – Each student is responsible to write a one-page reflection journal (roughly 400 words). In your reflection you should aim to touch on the following:
Did anything surprise you or stand out to you when completing the Scavenger Hunt?
What might be some of the barriers newcomers face when trying to complete these applications? (remember to think intersectionally!)
How could these processes be made easier?
What are some things settlement workers should bear in mind when supporting clients to complete these applications? What about placement students?
How do these applications, and this platform connect with some of the broader themes and concepts we have been discussing in class? Are they accessible? Inclusive? Trauma-informed?
Your journals will be submitted through blackboard, and will also be worth 10% of your final grade.
