Written Paper-132 World History
Students are to choose a historical figure from a list at the end of this section and write a three-to-five-page (typed, double-space) essay on that individual. The following questions should be answered in your essay: Why did you choose this individual from the list as a topic for your paper? Based on your research, what were the goals of this individual? What personal events and factors influenced his course of action? What motivated this person to take the actions that he undertook? Do you think the individual was successful in pursuing his goals, why or why not? What do you consider to be the individual’s most important contributions to World History (good or bad)? Overall, did you admire this person-why or why not? Most of your essay should be devoted to answering these questions rather than a straight biographical account.
There is to be no graphic art work on your cover sheet. Each page of the essay should have standard top and bottom margins and standard font (Times New Roman, 12-inch font). Papers should be doubled-spaced. The questions are to be answered in the body of your essay-do not write out the questions and then answer them. The paper should be written as a coherent whole.
You must demonstrate in your essay that you used at least two sources outside of your text and class outline by citing parenthetically in text. Only one of these sources can be an internet article. At the end of your essay, you must formally list these sources on a page entitled References (APA style). If you use an Internet article, you must give in your citations the specific web address (not yahoo.com, or google.com, or a links web page). For examples, see reference page (third page)
This paper should express your own words and thoughts and written in your own words. If it is found that you copied from an outside source or worked on this paper with another student, you will receive a grade of “F” on your paper.
Your paper must be on this individual:
- Toussaint Louverture
Citing References:
Parenthetical reference in a paper, book
When you do not mention the author in your text, give the author’s name and the date, separated by a comma, in parentheses at the end of the cited material. The book must be listed on the reference page.
Example: One study found that seventeen percent of adopted children in the United States are of a different race than their adoptive parents (Paterson, 2003).
If you use the author’s name in the text, then place the date of publication immediately following the author’s name. Again, book must be listed on the reference page
Example: According to Paterson (2003), one study found that seventeen percent of adopted children in the United States are of a different race than their adoptive parents.
If you use a quotation: the page number, preceded by “p.” appears in parentheses after the quotation.
Paterson (2003) discovered that “seventeen percent of adopted children in the United States are of a different race than their adoptive parents” (p. 13).
All words directly copied from a source must be within quotation marks and cited.
Electronic Source: Cite a Web or electronic document as you would a print source above. You would need to cite this on your reference page. If this information is unavailable, you may cite the entire web site, include its address in the parenthesis in your text. If you cite the whole web site, you do not have to put it on the Reference page.
Example: Seventeen percent of adopted children in the United States are of a different race than their adopted parents (http//www.psyche.cs.monash.edu.au)
Reference Page citations
Book- Author, Publication date in parentheses, and Title italicized, and Publication information.
Example: Lightman, A. P. (2002). The Diagnosis. New York: Vintage Books.
